In the first of his ‘Lockdown Interviews’ Murray met up with Edinburgh based rock outfit Driven By Harness, using the now almost ubiquitous Zoom communication system. In what turned out to be a very light-hearted and engaging chat the band touch on all things musical including their brand new single, coping with isolation, the state of the music industry and generally putting the world to rights.
The band was originally conceived simply as an outlet for the songs of Andrew Burton, main songwriter, singer and guitarist of the band. This quickly transitioned into a 3 piece with the additions of Brett Allan on bass and Alan O’Leary on drums.
Driven By Harness is a band with a wide array of musical influences, many of which can be heard throughout their music. Citing acts including Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Manchester Orchestra, James Brown, Tom Waits, Les McCann, Ryan Adams, Funkadelic, The Kills and Portishead this isn’t your average four to the floor rock act. Driven By Harness produce songs which are lyrically rich, musically rounded and appropriately complex in their structure and often very, very catchy.
Driven By Harness released its’ debut mini-album back in 2016; The Trade in Lunacy and toured extensively on the back of this. On the road the band has performed across the UK and central Europe including several festival appearances including the Bute Music Festival on the West coast of Scotland and Immecke Rock Festival in Northern Germany.
The album itself was mastered in New Jersey by Gene Paul, the multi Grammy Award winning son on guitar legend Les Paul. The new single released on May 1st, New Working Order, stands on the shoulders of the band’s previous work and is already gathering momentum and critical acclaim. Plans are afoot for a second EP/Album with New Working Order sure to take centre stage as soon as global circumstances allow.
